Department of Soil Science

Welcome Message from The Head of Department- Soil Science

Welcome to the Department of Soil Science at the University of Calabar (Unical)- Nigeria. Unical is recognised globally as a University where innovative ideas are transformed into practical solutions. The Department was created from the defunct Department of Agronomy in 1986 with the aim of training and developing graduates that can globally compete and contribute ideas towards solving problems related to agriculture, agronomy and sustainable environmental management.
Currently, we run programmes that lead to the award of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Soil Science. Our curricula provide students with a wide range of options including Pedology, Soil Survey & Land Use Planning, Soil Physics & Hydrology, Soil Chemistry and Mineralogy, Soil Biology & Biochemistry, Soil Fertility & Plant Nutrition, Soil Conservation & Land Management, to specialise in. We also have professional courses leading to a professional Diploma in Irrigation & Drainage Technology and Masters of Integrated Water Resources Management. We are preferentially endowed with specialists teaching staff who teach, train, research and render community development services to private, national and international organisations. Thirty-four staff members comprising twenty teaching, six technical and eight administrative staff are available in the Department.
The Department has four multi-disciplinary research laboratories including Soil Physics & Hydrology, Soil Chemistry & Fertility, Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry. Our average students population hovers around one hundred and fifty for the undergraduate and fifty for the postgraduate programmes.
We prepare our graduates to be successful professional soil scientists who can take up the challenges of the 21st century. Great strides have been recorded by our graduates in highly competitive job openings in educational and research, private and government institutions. When next you are either seeking for a soil science Department for admission or recommending one, consider our Department.
We will welcome any feedback, questions and suggestions that you may wish to drop for us as such may help improve our programmes.
Once again, welcome to the Department of Soil Science and we hope that you will visit us soon.
