Department of Microbiology

Welcome Message from The Head of Department- Microbiology

Welcome to the Department of Microbiology- one of the departments created in 2001 from the old Department of Biological Sciences inherited from the University of Nigeria, Calabar Campus that was established in 1978. The Department is located in the Biological Sciences building that also hosts the Departments of Zoology and Environmental Biology, Plant and Ecological Studies, and Genetics and Biotechnology. The primary aim of the Microbiology programme is to develop firm research and entrepreneurial skills in clinical microbiology, industrial microbiology and biotechnology, and environmental microbiology and biotechnology in her young graduates. The programme’s philosophy, which is centrally situated within the general philosophy of the University of Calabar, strongly emphasizes these areas to prepare students for challenging and rewarding careers in industry, government, consulting, teaching and research.

Our graduate programme is focused and decisive and admits research-oriented first-degree graduates of Microbiology and those from related disciplines like Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Chemical and Civil Engineering for microbiological researches. Areas of specialization include Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology, Food and Industrial Microbiology, Pathogenic Microbiology and Public Health, and Environmental Microbiology. Outstanding graduate students have been of tremendous help to the department by contributing, especially, but not limited to, industrially-relevant microorganisms to the University of Calabar Collection of Microorganisms; the only registered microbial culture collection in Nigeria.

The Department of Microbiology is administered by Substantive (Full Professors) or Acting Heads (Ph.D. holders below the rank of Full Professor), appointed by the Vice-Chancellor with a team of competent academic, administrative and technical staff to assist in the day-to-day running of the department.

Our doors are open to global collaborations that will foster an exchange of knowledge and technical skills which are particularly sought after in universities from third world countries such as ours.  Should you have any comments, questions, suggestions and feedback, send them to us using any of our contact channels.

The Department of Microbiology was created from the Department of Biological Sciences established since 1978; one of the few departments used to establish the University of Nigeria, Calabar Campus. It started off as a unit within the Department of Biological Sciences in 1990 to award a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Microbiology. Other sister units within the department included Biology, Botany and Zoology. As a unit, it gained interim accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 1992. The unit attained its autonomous status as a fully edged department on 1st April, 2001 and was fully accredited by NUC as a department in 2005.
