Department of Linguistics And Nigerian Languages

Welcome Message from The Head of Department- Linguistics And Nigerian Languages

I warmly welcome you to the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages at the University of Calabar, where possibilities have no bounds.
Language plays a fundamental role in our daily activities, relationships, thoughts, and cultures. Linguistics, which deals with the scientific study of human languages, was formally introduced at the University of Calabar in 1977 when the then Department of Modern Languages was enlarged and renamed the Department of Languages and Linguistics. At the 135th Meeting of the Senate of the University of Calabar held on 24th January 2002, approval was given for the bifurcation of the erstwhile Department of Languages and Linguistics. Following the verification exercise by the National Universities Commission in 2007, Communication Studies was added to her curriculum; hence, the Department was renamed Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies. However, at the 211th meeting of the University of Calabar Senate held on 15th August 2017, Senate formally approved the establishment of the Department of Mass Communication, thus severing the Communication Studies component from the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies. Senate also in the same meeting, approved the renaming of the Department as Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages with effect from the 2017/2018 academic session. The Department, however, continue teaching Communication Studies courses until they were gradually phased out in the 2019/2020 academic session.
The objective of the Department is to elaborately expose students to the nature of human language, equip them with basic techniques of linguistic analysis and language documentation, as well as train them to acquire high-level skills that would help them to maximize their performance in a highly competitive and already saturated labor market. History

The Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies is a unique centre of excellence in teaching and research in the Faculty of Arts, University of Calabar, Calabar Nigeria. We generate and develop new ideas and projects in linguistic and communication scholarship, and equip our students with high-level skills that will help them to maximize their performance in the highly competitive and already saturated labour market.

We give our students enabling opportunities to develop their critical thinking skills. These skills can be developed across a wide range of context including practical or applied learning opportunities. Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Human language is a complex system of knowledge and abilities which enable speakers to communicate with one another. Communication is a symbolic process where meaning is shared and negotiated. Language and communication are not just strongly intertwined they are dynamic and receiver-oriented.

Our broad interdisciplinary learning and teaching enable our students and lecturers to make connections through exploring clear and relevant links across the linguistic and communication curriculum. We train our students to develop confidence in facing challenges, both intellectually and practically and motivate them to demonstrate deep inquisitive attitudes towards linguistic and communication thoughts.

We run a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree programme in Linguistics and Communication Studies. We also domicile another Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree programme in Efik (Linguistics) at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level, we have a Masters of Arts (MA), Masters of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Linguistics or Communication.
