Welcome Message from The Head of Department- .
On behalf of the staff and students of the Department of Education Arts at the University of Calabar, I welcome you to its web portal where you will find information about our academic programs, courses and curriculum, research, staffing structure, and other relevant information. Our department occupies a unique position in the university and the Faculty of Arts and Social Science Education. Through our undergraduate and postgraduate programs, we are well-positioned to develop human capital in the arts/humanities, thus, meeting the personnel needs of Nigeria and that of the global community. Our programs are analogous to the hub of a wheel with spokes connecting to different points on the rim. Thus, students in the Department of Arts Education freely take courses in other faculties within the Education family, and other faculties and departments outside, depending on their areas of specialization. This allows our faculty to have a robust network of relationships with staff and students of other faculties, colleges, and institutes within the University.
The Department runs four undergraduate programs, namely:
1. B.A. Ed. Education English
2. B.A. Ed. Education French
3. B.A. Ed. Education History
4. B.A. Ed. Education Religion
and postgraduate programs in various fields. Our educational programs are designed to utilize the best empirically-validated pedagogies to equip students with the proper mental framework and skills needed to stand their ground in public, private, and international spheres. The Department is highly resourceful and has been preferentially equipped with high-end teaching, learning, and research facilities needed to make learning memorable. The Department has a long-standing collaborative arrangement with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria to ensure that our graduates are licensed as professional teachers as soon as they graduate, ensuring a seamless transition from graduation to licensing.
All our programs are powered by a highly motivated and dedicated team of local and international scholars. The academic staff members have a usually deep commitment to encouraging and motivating students to learn, acquire skills, and consequently, develop a life-changing experience that has enabled our esteemed alumni population to be outstanding in their various places of assignment. The department places a very high premium on the overall success of students, and therefore, assigns a set of students’-friendly, highly exposed, and widely experienced staff to serve academic advisers, examinations officers, and counsellors to help them navigate the academic and the para-academic dimensions of the university environment. Our department has worked very hard to sustain its agelong multicultural and multinational perspective to teaching and learning, which has made our department, not only, attractive but also, a second home to students and staff. These approaches have not only fit our graduates into the global society but also prepare them to be instruments of desirable changes in society.
Our focus is also broadened to validate our holistic education posture. Annually, our students organize the HOD’s Essay and Poetry Competition as well as a football match, where our formidable football team thrills spectators.
Given the unique design of our programs, where work-integrated learning through teaching practice and other industrial work experience is incorporated into the curriculum, our graduates have very high employment prospects. Our network of highly successful alumni whom we celebrate regularly has also proved rather useful in this regard. We remind grateful to them for their enormous contributions to the Department and the University at large.
Welcome to the Department of Arts Education and bask in excellence.
Dr Eucharia O. Obiekezie

Mission / Vision / Philosophy / Objective

The Education/Religious Studies program is designed to cover all the facets of religious phenomena as they affect the history, tradition, economics, social, political, and ethics of man. The effect of this approach is to develop man in his existential reality to produce an all-around society in realizing life objectives. Students are allowed to develop the right moral values. This is expressed in their quest to understand what ‘the truth is, with its attendant variables like integrity, honesty, justice, goodness, righteousness, etc. The Education Religion program sets out to create high-level manpower that will manage teaching and learning activities in Religious Studies as well as research in Religious Studies education in all categories of schools and institutions.
The objectives of the program are to:

2. Develop in the students the capacity to think clearly and objectively.
3. Equip the students with the necessary intellectual skills needed to cope with challenges facing religion in a complex technological and scientific age.
4. Enrich the intellectual potentials of the students in preparation for responsible citizenship.
5. Develop in the students, competence in the use of evaluation techniques and materials.
6. Enhance the students’ capacity to distinguish between facts and opinions and scientific statements and value judgment.
7. Inculcate in the students the skills in planning, organizing, and providing instruction in Religious Studies.
It is necessary to trace the history of the Arts Education Department from its academic “ancestry”, namely the University of Calabar, for posterity’s purposes. The University, having metamorphosed from the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, became a full-fledged University in 1976 with the Faculty of Education as one of the faculties.
Five years after, in 1981, the Faculty of Education gave birth to two departments; Educational Foundation and Administration, and Curriculum and Teaching. At that initial time, Curriculum and Teaching started with three programs- Education Arts, Education Science, and Education Social Science. Later, some other programs such as Elementary Education, Business Education, Special Education, Agricultural Education, and Physical and Health Education were introduced into the department and have been accorded their full departmental status; namely Department of Vocational and Special Education in 1997. However, the Elementary Education program remains with Curriculum and Teaching.
For 33 years (1981-2014), the Department of Curriculum and Teaching steadily hosted Education Arts, Education Science, and Education Social Science programs. Since the Department had these many courses, programs, and students to handle, the University of Calabar at its 200th Senate meeting of 13th November 2014 approved the split of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching into five full autonomous departments made up of Arts Education, Science Education, Environmental Education, Social Science, and the new Curriculum and Teaching.
The Arts Education Department came into full existence on 1st February 2015 with four programs – Education/English, Education/French, Education/History and Education/Religion; with students’ strength of two hundred and forty-two (242) and staff strength of eight (6) academic and four (4) non-academic staff at inception. There are also many academic and non-academic staff from the students’ electives (English and Literary Studies, Modern Languages and Translation Studies, History and International Studies and Religious and Cultural Studies Department), and other departments in the Faculty of Education.
The Arts Education Department is positioned to train and retrain highly qualified professional teachers, both at undergraduate and graduate levels.
