Welcome Message from The Head of Department- Agric Economics

I most warmly welcome you to the new academic year and to the most prestigious Department in the University of Calabar: The Department of Agricultural Economics.

We are here to support you, every step of the way, as you make the best out of your stay in your programme. For the returning students, I heartily welcome you as you continue the journey to the completion of your degree programme.  For our dear freshmen and women, who are just joining us, we are glad to have you, we encourage you to make the best use of your time with us. We assure you that you can be the best you can be if you are diligent in your pursuit of the programme.

The Department of Agricultural Economics has some of the best array of academic staff who are highly committed to teaching and research.  We have very friendly and cordial disposition towards our students. Staff advisers are attached to students at the different levels of study. As you start a new academic year, please take advantage of this opportunity and have a counselling session with your academic adviser. The head of Department’s office is open to attend to your academic needs.

To provide qualitative education using quality teaching and learning methods that will inculcate in our students the capacity to engage in integrated life applicable and life transforming research targeted at solving local and global challenges such as inefficient resource allocation, poverty, hunger and food insecurity.


To be a leading centre of excellence for the production of highly skilled, resourceful and innovative graduates in the discipline of Agricultural Economics. 


The philosophy of our degree programme is premised on the belief that every student in the Department is capable of being a world class Agricultural Economics graduate if provided with adequate theoretical and practical agricultural training in a conducive, teaching and learning environment.


(i) The programme seeks  to produce first rated  Agricultural Economists with broad based training in Agricultural Sciences who can combine academic excellence with a strong  sense of ethical responsibility to provide solutions to problems in the agricultural industry thereby contributing meaningfully to Local, State, National and global agricultural development.

 (ii)  Equip students to respond to high priority issues facing society in agribusiness, food production, input supply, product processing and marketing, environment and resource use.

(iii) Arm graduates with a thorough understanding of Agriculture and the   capacity to take up employment anywhere in Nigeria and the world and

 (iv)Produce graduates with entrepreneurship skills who will become job creators by applying their acquired skills.


Agricultural economics is one of the disciplines in the field of Agriculture. An Agricultural economist   applies the theories and principles of economics to better understand and solve issues in agriculture. Agricultural economists have good grasp of agriculture, microeconomics, macroeconomics, farm/agribusiness management, finance, marketing, resource use, environment, policy and development principles, along with strong data analysing, statistical and quantitative skills. They are equipped to apply these principles in the conduct of detailed and complex research thereby solving economic problems in the society. To become an agricultural economist at the first instance, you require a minimum of a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics, however, higher degrees (Masters/ doctoral) will make you a specialist in the various sub disciplines within Agricultural Economics.  Agricultural Economics is a multidisciplinary course with a vast range of Job opportunities.

5.      Crop, Livestock/ integrated Farms

6.      Corporate trade and marketing associations
